The Vote in Iraq
Well, I was surprised and heartened by the recent election in Iraq. To have so many people vote (about 57% of eligible voters) in the face of terrorist threats not to do so shows the deep-rooted desire of most Iraqis to have a voice in the future of their country. Of course, the choice they make may not be a Western-style, secular representative democracy like we might prefer -- but that's what freedom is about: getting to choose the shape of your society.
My optimism is somewhat tempered, however, by an article I saw from the New York Times dated 9/4/1967 entitled U.S. Encouraged by Vietnam Vote: Officials Cite 83% Turnout Despite Vietcong Terror.
If Vietnam didn't make it with an 83% turnout, what are Iraq's chances with only a 57% turnout?
